They dubbed themselves “the Magnificent Seven” even before they won the Olympic gold medal. But in no sport is magnificence so short-lived as in women’s gymnastics. Now, all grown up, the 1996 squad has been beset with disabling injuries and personal crises. Four of the seven are seeking spots on the women’s team for Sydney, and none appears to be a lock.
