LIVE: Follow Chiefs vs. Raiders updates from ‘Sunday Night Football’

An AFC West that was speculated to be one of the strongest in the NFL in the preseason has actually proven to have more parity than any other. Every team is within half a game of each other, only adding to the weight of divisional matchups. The Chargers have been uneven, the Broncos have been streaky, the Chiefs and Raiders look like good teams susceptible to struggles. While the NFL hasn’t “figured Patrick Mahomes out,” he certainly looks like someone who is forcing more passes this season than he did in years past.

Derek Carr, meanwhile, looks like the quarterback he’s always been. He’s throwing in high volumes, scoring a good amount, but also making his share of mistakes. Last week against the Giants was Carr’s first multi-interception game, and along with a fumble lost it did the Raiders in despite outgaining New York by over 150 yards. Darren Waller and Hunter Renfrow look like steadily reliable targets for Carr, and they could exploit a Chiefs defense that has struggled mightily against the pass.

Melvin Ingram looked like a difference-maker for the Chiefs’ defense after they held the Packers to just seven points last week, although the Raiders present a different kind of test. In a game with big implications, they’ll have to be at their best and keep Carr under duress to slow down the Raiders offense. The Chiefs offense should figure itself out, but the defense needs to keep the pace it set last Sunday if Kansas City is to go anywhere this season.
